Swagtron, formerly known as Swagway, is a U.S. company specializing in self-balancing electric scooters, also known as hoverboards. The T1 model, released in May of 2016, is the latest in the newer, safer generation of self-balancing scooters. This U.S. made board features durable construction, a variety of color options, more modern technology, and UL certification, meeting stringent electrical safety standards.
Specifications and Features
Swagtron’s T1 hoverboard is just the latest in its product line of self-balancing scooters and a vast improvement over its Swagway X1 predecessor. The T1 measures 23 inches wide and is four pounds lighter than the previous model. The body is made of an extremely durable ABS polymer shell, and the board features foot grips and bright LED headlights to illuminate your terrain. Included in your package are silicone wheel arch protectors to add to the aesthetics and durability of the board. You’ll be guaranteed a smooth ride due to Swagtron’s gyroscopic technology, zero-degree turning radius, and the ability to make climbs of up to thirty degrees.
The T1 is capable of carrying riders a minimum of 44 pound and 4 feet and has a maximum carrying capacity of 220 lbs.
Some earlier models of hoverboards were riddled with safety concerns (such as battery fires) and cheap manufacturing; Swagtron’s T1 (and the X1) have UL certification. The T1 is the first model to achieve UL 2272 certification, meaning the product has undergone a rigorous testing process by the science safety giant Underwriter Laboratories. The T1 meets all of the newest industry standards for electrical safety.
The battery includes patented Sentry Shield technology, a fireproof casing that acts as an extra measure of safety for its lithium ion battery. The battery has a charging time of approximately one hour and has a range of up to 7-12 miles. The hoverboard can move at speeds of 2-8 mph, depending on the weight of the rider, terrain, temperature, and driving technique.
In addition to the silicone wheel arch protectors, your package includes an instruction manual and charging cord. Those just learning to drive the hoverboard can use the learning mode to practice, and if you’re ever in a situation where the battery starts to die while you’re riding, the Safe Stop technology will let you know and automatically slow down, minimizing the risk of falling off at a sudden stop.
The T1 is competitively priced at $400.00, compared to some models costing upwards of $1,000.00 that lack the same safety standards.
The Good
The hoverboard market was floundering due to safety concerns, but the newer generation of hoverboards has added safety certifications, and Swagtron T1 leads the industry in becoming the first board to be UL 2272 certified, meaning it meets the latest industry standards for electrical safety. Those concerned about battery fires can rest assured that the product has undergone rigorous testing and has the added Sentry Shield battery technology. The hoverboard is also UN38.3 certified, meeting all transportation safety requirements for lithium batteries.
You even get your choice of the T1 in six colors: black, white, blue, green, dark red, gold, and pink. The T1 features high-quality gyroscope technology, giving you a smooth ride. Also, you’ll feel an enhanced ride due to the hoverboard’s tight turning radius, elegant responsiveness, and ability to climb relatively steep inclines.
The T1 has a minimum weight and height requirement of 44 pounds and 4 feet, meaning most of the family can ride.
The hoverboard employs an interesting safety feature called Safe Stop technology. When the battery starts to get to the end of its charge, it will give a warning beep and automatically lower the top speed, making it much safer if you choose to keep riding. If the hoverboard comes to a sudden stop upon the battery dying, the Safe Stop technology helps eliminate the potential to fall off the board.
The T1 has a cruising speed of 2-8 miles per hour, but also includes the neat feature of a training mode, allowing you an easier time to practice without fear. The unit also includes non-slip footpads. The T1 also has a high-quality lithium-ion battery encased in aluminum with the patented Sentry Shield technology, meaning you’ll have less concern in the case of battery overcharge or failure. Swagtron has made many welcome upgrades from the Swagway X1 without adding to the cost. Currently, the T1 is one of the least expensive UL certified self-balancing scooters on the market.
The Bad
The T1 has a somewhat limited warranty. There is a 30-day return policy to return your hoverboard unused and in its original packaging, mainly if you change your mind. There is a one-year manufacturer’s warranty in case of defects, but it doesn’t cover damage incurred from wear or potentially rough treatment. The wheel size is smaller compared to some other models, and at a diameter of 6.5 inches, it can’t handle significant changes in terrain like big cracks as well as some other models.
Currently, Swagtron is only available for sale within the United States, so you’ll have to look for a different brand if you live outside of the U.S. While the T1 has a minimum weight allowance of 44 pounds and height of 4 feet, making it suitable for kids, it is only recommended for ages 13 and up. With a shipping weight of almost 28 pounds, the unit is a little heavy, especially for children and older adults.
Verdict
Swagtron’s T1 is one of the latest and safest hoverboards on the market. At a competitive $400.00, you’ll be getting a great value from a reputable U.S. brand. This is a huge departure from the earlier, cheaper brands out of China. After only a short amount of time on the market, the T1 is one of the top-selling brands in self-balancing scooters, and a sister model with a few more accouterments is soon to follow. It’s a great option for children and adults, and it’s highly recommended.
